I really enjoyed photographing Denise, she’s such a kid at heart. I love that this bakery was a childhood dream of hers and here she is doing it.

The Scootabaker

December 18th, 2009 § 2

L.A’s All-Natural Dessert Delivery Service
Here are a few of my favorites from my shoot with Heather Wong, AKA The Scootabaker. Heather came by the studio the other day and baked up these yummy treats! We felt very lucky to have her there. Anyone who comes bearing food that looks and tastes this great is always welcome.
Heather offers Los Angeles an amazing service. Her company The Scootabaker not only bakes and delivers all-natural delicious desserts, they also deliver them to you on a scooter and I doubt I’m the only one who thinks that’s pretty cool.
The next shoot we have lined up will include Heather and her famous Scooter.

Sumi Chang’s chocolate croissant and peach tart

A recent New Yorker article chronicling Jonathan Gold’s life as a food critic, claims that he reviews somewhere between three and five hundred restaurants a year and drives about twenty-thousand miles during that year to get to them. In this month’s issue of Pasadena magazine Jonathan shares with us the restaurants that hold a special little place in his stomach when he doesn’t have to get in his car; where he goes when he is off duty.
To start off his list and his day, Euro Pane, Sumi Chang’s acclaimed Pasadena Bakery. Sumi, once a baker at Nancy Silverton’s La Brea Bakery has mastered the art of pastry making. It’s no wonder that Jonathan is there so much he feels like part of the furniture.

Intelligentsia-GQ Magazine

November 15th, 2009 § 4

In this month’s issue of GQ

Included in the November issue is an article on the best coffee shops around the country. Intelligentsia was included in the list and I was happy to take a photo trip to the cafe for the magazine to check it out. Now I’m not much of a coffee snob and to be honest (much to the horror of my friends) find myself continuing with the same cup of coffee at noon that I started with at 8 am, but what I can tell you from experience is that this place is charmingly eclectic and filled with people who know their coffee on both sides of the counter. I have also been told by a very reliable source that Intelligentsia is armed with a mean chocolate croissant. A great shot of espresso and a chocolate croissant, can you think of a better way to start your day? Ok maybe 3 shots of espresso, depending on the call time.

Roma Italian Deli-Pasadena Magazine

November 9th, 2009 § 1

Just walk in and ask for the sandwich

Whether you’re stopping in for a quick sandwich, cured olives or for the best pancetta this side of Italy, this endearing little place will have what you’re looking for.

Meet Rosario. Rosario IS Roma Italian Deli. He has been with this old world deli for 55 years. Rosario is Sicilian, 5 foot nothing and is always smirking.
I think he smirks because he knows his deli will make you happy and that makes him happy. He doesn’t have to wait for your reaction to the first bite of The Sandwich; he already knows what it will be. He smirks because he’s found his place in this world, sharing the joys of perfect Italian meats and cheeses with you and I. Maybe that’s a whole lot to assume from the smirk of a cute, little Sicilian butcher but it sure makes perfect sense to me.

The Apple Pan, The Glorious Apple Pan

October 7th, 2009 § 4

After 62 years The Apple Pan is still going strong.
When I first moved to Los Angeles from the mid-west I couldn’t seem to find a burger in Los Angeles worth eating. Of course I voiced my complaints and the general response was that I must have not been to The Apple Pan yet. I quickly changed that and it’s now become one of my favorite places in Los Angeles.

While shooting at The Apple Pan in West Los Angeles today I met a variety of people, all of which were excited to share the story of how the popular restaurant fit into their lives. When the food is this good, you get happy customers, proud customers. I met Terry who asked me how long I thought she had been coming there. I was way off when I guessed 20 years, she laughed and said, “Try 50 years.” I met another man in his 30′s who remembers eating at the restaurant at 5 years old, a toddler enjoying the perfect French fries and a first timer with his loyal Apple Pan friend.

Everything has its place at the restaurant and the workers look happy to be there. They seem content, proud, just like the customers.
The Apple Pan is small and simple and there’s not too much to the menu. They don’t need gimmicks the quality speaks for itself. Quality Forever, that’s what their sign reads and that’s all it needs to say.

So here it is, the famous Kogi BBQ truck making it’s way around Los Angeles.
People that haven’t been will always ask, “Is it really that big of a deal, do I really need to go to the Kogi Truck?” Yes, yes you do!
If you click on the link above it will direct you to their website where you can spy on the truck and see where it will be pulling up next.

Get 2 orders of the Kogi Sliders right away.
2
This is a typical Kogi line. I’m not a big fan of lines, but I’m willing to wait in this one.
