Kindergarten Already

July 8th, 2010 § 7

Kindergarten literally means children’s garden. It’s fitting.

Every year it is my plan to photograph my niece on this bench near the house where I was raised. Every summer I will go home to Wisconsin and snap 5-10 quick photos of her before she becomes impatient and darts off to the playground where I promise her we’ll play after our yearly bench photos. I wonder what will get her there when she’s grown tired on the playground.

This was the bench I first photographed her on when the idea came to me to document her at the same place each year.

The beautiful and inspirational Denise Weber

I really enjoyed photographing Denise, she’s such a kid at heart. I love that this bakery was a childhood dream of hers and here she is doing it.

Barbara and Her Trusty Waffle Iron

December 5th, 2009 § 8

Every Saturday for the last 6 years Barbara has opened up her home to friends, family, neighbors and anyone else who might be in need of a waffle and a cup of coffee. There is only one exception to this weekend ritual and that is when she is busting a move in one of the dozen tap dance performances that she has throughout the year. Yes folks, she not only cooks for the neighborhood but she also tap dances. Barbara also sings in her church choir; head alto I believe, boasted one of her friends and waffle customers.
One other small detail, Barbara is 94 years old.
Maybe it’s not considered couth to share a woman’s age with the world but I think when you live to be Barbara’s age and you’re living your life as full as she is, you no longer need to hide the years but instead be proud of them.
I showed up to the shoot this morning knowing that the article was about generosity and inspiration but I had no idea I would leave so inspired. ha!
Barbara made being 94 look easy. If she managed to make me this happy for 3 hours on one Saturday morning, I can’t imagine how much joy she has brought to her friends and family over a lifetime.

Roma Italian Deli-Pasadena Magazine

November 9th, 2009 § 1

Just walk in and ask for the sandwich

Whether you’re stopping in for a quick sandwich, cured olives or for the best pancetta this side of Italy, this endearing little place will have what you’re looking for.

Meet Rosario. Rosario IS Roma Italian Deli. He has been with this old world deli for 55 years. Rosario is Sicilian, 5 foot nothing and is always smirking.
I think he smirks because he knows his deli will make you happy and that makes him happy. He doesn’t have to wait for your reaction to the first bite of The Sandwich; he already knows what it will be. He smirks because he’s found his place in this world, sharing the joys of perfect Italian meats and cheeses with you and I. Maybe that’s a whole lot to assume from the smirk of a cute, little Sicilian butcher but it sure makes perfect sense to me.
